Turntables up to £499

Project Primary E

The Primary E is a new reduced cost version of the Primary turntable (detailed below), making entry into quality turntables cheaper than ever. The key changes are a simpler motor and power supply arrangement (a direct wired 240v motor in place of an external wall wart power supply), a single finish option and more basic Ortofon cartridge.

Cartridge: Ortofon OM1 prefitted

Lid: Yes

Finishes: textured matte black only

Project Primary E turntable: £189.00

Rega Planar 1

The Planar 1 has just been revised for 2021 is an improved look, with a higher grade Matt finish available in either black or white on the light yet rigid laminated plinth.

The rest of the recipe is unchanged, and widely so! The RB110 tonearm it features a patent pending ultra low friction bearing design which is claimed to have zero play, and the headshell is integrated into the arm tube to make it as rigid as possible. A Rega Carbon cartridge is included and prefitted, so setup is as simple as pushing the counterweight into place.

The drive system uses a 24v motor with an aluminium pulley, using the new improved Rega EBLT drive belt onto the sub platter, with a thick 23mm phenolic platter that provides a great combination of low colouration and strong flywheel effect. The platter spins upon a brass bearing assembly which also has a patent pending design that improves fit and reduces stress on the contact points, whilst minimising the transfer of potential energy.

The clear acrylic lid is hinged and can also be easily lifted off, so the choice to use it with the lid or without during listening takes no more time than putting on an LP.

In our opinion (and that of many reviews and awards panels), this is the benchmark for ‘starter’ audiophile turntables. It has been incredibly well judged, offering great toe tapping musicality with refinement that is not normal at this price point. We can’t recommend it highly enough - another classic from Rega and one that’s exceptionally affordable too!

Three versions of the  turntable are available, they are detailed in the pricing summary below.

The powerful AC motor features manual speed change as standard, but an electronic power supply can be added for improved performance and electronic switching between 33.3and 45rpm.

A high quality MM cartridge, the Edwards Audio C100, is factory fitted and the result is an excellent sounding turntable that is open, fast and very musical. Quite rightly is has already won a ‘product of the year’ award by the German ‘LP Magazin’.

Rega Planar 2

The Planar 2 is a model that has been missing from the Rega range for several years, so it’s great to see it back.

The plinth is a high gloss black or white acrylic laminated design which is rigid, lightweight and very attractive. A 24 volt motor drives a new patent pending self securing main bearing, which is claimed to offer improved fit and reduced stress on the bearing, as well as reduced energy transfer into the plinth. On top spins a 10mm thick glass platter with white frosted edging.

Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO

The Evo is the latest in the iconic Debut line of turntables from Pro-ject. As you’d perhaps expect with a design with such an illustrious history this is no radical redesign, instead there’s a careful reevaluation to find performance improvements  where possible, whilst continuing to offer great value and cosmetics at the same time.

The stiff and lightweight carbon fibre tonearm is factory fitted with an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, and high quality (but user replaceable) RCA cables are included. The motor is fed from an internal AC power supply (fed from an external ‘wall wart’ power supply) and on a new, damped motor plate which is more rigidly coupled to the MDF plinth than before. This plinth is now supported via three well engineered metal feet which are threaded to allow accurate levelling.

The steel platter contains has damping ring on its underside, which reduces resonance and adds a little more flywheel effect too.

Playback of 33.3, 45 and 78rpm is possible, with simple switch operation to go between 33.3 and 45. For 78rpm you swap to a different belt which uses its own ridge on the motor pulley (you will also need to change to a 78rpm compatible stylus, not supplied).

The plinth is available in a wide variety of 9 attractive gloss and satin finishes, please see list below, all are no cost options.

Speeds: 33.3, 45 electronic change (78rpm also possible by changing supplied belt, see above)

Cartridge: Ortofon 2M Red

Lid: Included

Finishes: Gloss Black, Gloss Red and Gloss White, Satin Black, Satin Fir Green, Satin Golden Yellow, Satin Steel Blue, Satin White, Satin Walnut veneer.
