Michell turntable tweaks
The following details tweaks for various JA Michell turntables
For the AC motor Michell turntables (early Gyrodec, Syncro, Mycro, Focus) please see the Govenor power supply
For the later DC motor Gyrodec and Gyro SE use the Michell HR power supply
Michell arm plate decoupling kit
These are replacements for the standard arm board stand offs as fitted to the Gyro SE, GyroDec and Orbe and are now fitted as standard. They incorporate rubber ‘O’ rings to help reduce coupling between the armboard and the main subchassis of the turntable. They give very worthwhile improvements to the overall sonic presentation and detail retrieval, reducing surface noise and especially improving high frequency performance.
They are available in two versions, one for use with Rega arms (for the single bolt fixing and not the three point fixing) and one for SME arms (which also is suitable for many other arm types), the only difference being the termination of the earthing wire (the one photographed above left is for Rega based tonearms). This is necessary as the kit not only reduces mechanical coupling but also electrically insulates it too.
Michell Arm plate Decoupling Kit R for Rega single point tonearms: £37.00
Michell Arm plate Decoupling Kit S for SME tonearms and others: £37.00
Orbe platter kit for Gyrodec and Gyro SE
Intended for use on the Gyrodec and the Gyro SE, the Orbe platter upgrade kit gives a large slice of improvements from their flagship deck at a very reasonable cost. The key is of course the heavier 60mm vinyl/acrylic platter which has greater mechanical integrity and an improved flywheel effect. The supplied screw down clamp is an important part of this kit (which must be used with every LP due to the concave nature of the assembly), and included is a new threaded spindle for the upper part of the bearing for it to screw onto.
Also included is enough Densoseal (a very sticky black coloured product similar to blu-
The improvements to sound include blacker backgrounds which result in improved low level resolution, more extended and solid low frequencies as well as a general improvement in refinement and composure throughout the frequency range, which also brings with it better imaging too.
This kit is quite simple to fit with good instructions provided, but you do need to be confident working around the bearing of the turntable, and I do recommend removing the arm board when applying the chassis dampening. Naturally we can fit this kit for you for a small labour charge, please contact us for details.
Michell Orbe Platter upgrade kit: £825.00
Michell VTA Adjuster
The Michell VTA adjuster is designed to provide easy VTA adjustment for single point Rega tonearms on later Michell Gyordec, Gyro SE and Orbe turntables (the armboard must have a recess in it for the adjuster to drop into, earlier decks will require a change to the later armboard to fit it). The kit now includes 2mm shorter spacers for the armboard as the adjuster does slightly raise the arm in its lowest position
Michell VTA adjuster for single point fixed Rega arms £25.00.
